Urgent hot-water help
No Hot Water? Here's What Usually Causes It
Losing hot water completely is one of the most common hot-water call-outs in New Zealand. The cause depends on the type of system you have — and knowing which system you're on helps a provider respond faster.

At a glance
No Hot Water — key points
- Electric cylinder: element or thermostat failure
- Tripped breaker or RCD at the switchboard
- Gas califont: ignition or supply fault
- Empty LPG bottle or closed gas valve
- Heat pump fault codes or lockouts
- Cylinder failure at end of life
Electric cylinder systems
The most common causes are a failed heating element, a failed thermostat, or a tripped circuit breaker or RCD at the switchboard. Some homes also run on controlled (ripple) supply, which can affect heating times.
You can safely check whether a breaker has tripped at the switchboard. Anything beyond that — element, thermostat, wiring or valve work — needs a qualified professional.
Gas califont systems
For continuous-flow gas systems, check whether gas is available to other appliances and, for LPG, whether the bottle is empty or the valve is closed. Error codes on the controller are also a useful diagnostic clue.
Ignition faults, flow-sensor faults, blocked flues and heat exchanger problems all need a qualified gasfitter.
Heat pump water heaters
Heat pump systems can lock out on fault codes, or fall back to element-only operation. If the unit is running but water is not heating, note any code shown on the controller before requesting help.

Is there anything safe I can check myself?
You can check whether a circuit breaker or RCD has tripped at the switchboard, whether other gas appliances are working, and whether an LPG bottle is empty. Do not open the cylinder, adjust valves, or work on gas or electrical components.
