Heat Pump Hot Water Cost NZ
6 minute read
Heat pump hot water is usually a larger up-front investment than a like-for-like electric cylinder replacement. Understanding what drives that cost makes it far easier to compare quotes properly rather than just looking at the bottom line.
The main cost drivers
Two properties can receive very different quotes for what looks like the same job. The difference is almost always in the installation scope rather than the appliance itself.
- System type — integrated all-in-one versus split system
- Cylinder capacity and the recovery rate required
- Whether the existing system is low pressure or mains pressure
- Pipework changes, valve upgrades and tempering requirements
- Electrical work, including switchboard or circuit changes
- Location of the outdoor unit and any base, bracket or drainage work
- Removal and disposal of the old system
Why low-pressure conversions cost more
If your home currently runs an open-vented low-pressure cylinder with a ceiling header tank, moving to a heat pump usually means moving to mains pressure at the same time. That adds pipework, valves and sometimes remedial work to the scope.
This is one of the most common reasons a quote comes in higher than the headline system price seen online.
Running cost versus install cost
The case for heat pump hot water is usually made over the life of the system rather than on day one. Because the unit moves heat instead of generating all of it, the electricity used for the same volume of hot water is substantially lower than a standard resistive element.
The payback period depends on your electricity tariff, household hot-water usage, the efficiency of the specific system and the installed cost. Ask providers to explain the assumptions behind any savings figures they quote.
Comparing quotes fairly
When you receive multiple quotes, compare the scope, not just the price. Check the system model and capacity, whether pipework and electrical work are included, what warranty applies to both the product and the workmanship, and who handles disposal of the old unit.
