When an electric cylinder reaches end of life, most households face a straightforward decision: replace it with another electric cylinder, or step up to a heat pump water heater. Both are valid choices for different situations.
How they differ
A standard electric cylinder heats water with a resistive element — one unit of electricity produces roughly one unit of heat. A heat pump water heater uses a refrigeration cycle to extract heat from the surrounding air, so it can deliver considerably more heat per unit of electricity.
The trade-off is complexity and up-front cost. A heat pump has a fan and compressor, needs suitable airflow, and typically costs more to install.
Where an electric cylinder still makes sense
Lower up-front cost, simple installation, quiet operation and no outdoor space requirement all count in favour of a conventional cylinder. For smaller households, apartments, rentals with lower usage, or tight installation locations, it can remain the more practical option.
Where heat pump hot water tends to win
Households with high, consistent hot-water demand generally see the strongest case for a heat pump, because the efficiency advantage applies to every litre heated. Owners planning to stay in the property long term also benefit more from the lower running cost.
