Best Hot Water Options for NZ Homes
6 minute read
There is no single best hot-water system for New Zealand homes. There is, however, usually a clear best option for a particular property, household and budget.
Mains pressure electric cylinder
The default replacement for most homes. Predictable, well understood, relatively affordable to install, and compatible with modern tapware. Running costs are higher than a heat pump for the same hot water.
Heat pump hot water
The most efficient mainstream option for households with steady demand. Higher installed cost, requires outdoor space and airflow, and produces some operating noise — but substantially lower electricity use.
Continuous flow gas (califont)
Compact, endless hot water within its flow capacity, and no standing losses. Best suited to properties with reticulated natural gas; LPG running costs are a common reason households reconsider.
Low pressure cylinders
Still present in many older homes. Functional but generally outperformed by mains pressure. Most households upgrade when the cylinder is due for replacement.
Solar hot water
Can contribute meaningfully in sunnier regions, usually paired with an electric or gas backup. Roof orientation, shading and system design are critical to performance.
How to choose
- How many people use hot water and when
- What system and pressure you have today
- Available indoor and outdoor space
- Energy connections and pricing at your property
- Up-front budget versus long-term running cost
- How long you intend to stay in the home
