Gas Califont vs Electric Hot Water
5 minute read
Continuous-flow gas califonts and stored electric systems solve the same problem in very different ways. Neither is universally better — the right answer depends on the property and how the household uses hot water.
Continuous flow gas
A califont heats water on demand, so it does not run out in the way a cylinder can. It takes up little space and there are no standing heat losses from stored water.
The limitation is flow rate: running several outlets at once can exceed the unit's capacity, and temperature can fluctuate.
Stored electric
An electric cylinder stores a fixed volume of heated water. Performance is predictable and multiple outlets are handled well until the stored volume is used, after which recovery time applies.
Modern insulation limits standing losses, and heat pump versions dramatically reduce the electricity required.
Cost considerations
Running cost depends on your energy pricing. Bottled LPG in particular tends to be an expensive energy source, which is why many LPG households look at electric or heat pump alternatives when a califont reaches end of life.
