Gas to Electric Hot Water Conversion
5 minute read
Converting hot water from gas to electric is increasingly common in New Zealand, particularly for households on bottled LPG or those replacing an end-of-life califont.
Typical scope of work
- Decommissioning or removing the existing gas appliance
- Selecting and locating the new electric cylinder or heat pump
- Adapting pipework and installing required valves
- Confirming switchboard and circuit capacity
- Commissioning and setting safe delivery temperatures
- Removal and disposal of the old appliance
Things that change day to day
With a cylinder, hot water is stored rather than instantaneous, so sizing matters. A correctly sized system will comfortably cover your household's peak usage; an undersized one will not.
Space requirements also change — you gain a cylinder location requirement and, with a heat pump, an outdoor unit position.
Keeping gas for other uses
Many households convert hot water while keeping gas for cooking or space heating. A qualified gasfitter can advise on safe isolation of the hot-water appliance while retaining the rest of the system.
