No Hot Water: Common Causes
5 minute read
Losing hot water completely is one of the most common household faults. The likely cause depends heavily on which type of system you have.
Electric cylinder systems
Failed elements and thermostats are the most frequent causes, followed by tripped circuit breakers or RCDs. Homes on controlled (ripple) supply can also see longer-than-expected heating times.
Gas califont systems
Look for an empty LPG bottle, a closed valve, or whether other gas appliances still work. Error codes on the controller are useful information for a gasfitter. Ignition, flow sensor and flue issues all require qualified attention.
Heat pump water heaters
Heat pumps can lock out on a fault code or fall back to element-only heating. Note any code displayed before requesting service — it speeds up diagnosis considerably.
What is safe to check yourself
- Whether a breaker or RCD has tripped at the switchboard
- Whether other gas appliances in the home are working
- Whether an LPG bottle is empty or its valve is closed
- Whether a fault code is shown on the controller
