Why Is My Hot Water Cylinder Leaking?
4 minute read
A leaking cylinder should never be ignored. Even a slow leak can cause substantial damage to flooring, framing and ceilings, and a leak from the cylinder body itself signals that the vessel has failed.
What to do first
If it is safe to do so, switch off the power supply to the cylinder at the switchboard and close the cylinder's cold-water isolating valve. Then request assistance from a qualified professional promptly.
Do not attempt to repair the cylinder, its valves or electrical components yourself — this work is regulated in New Zealand.
Common sources of leaks
- Pressure relief valve discharging (sometimes normal, sometimes a fault)
- Failed or corroded valve fittings and connections
- Loose or degraded pipework joints near the cylinder
- Corrosion of the cylinder body — usually terminal
- Element seal failure
- Condensation mistaken for a leak in humid cupboards
Repairable or not?
Leaks at valves, fittings and connections can often be repaired. A leak from the body of the cylinder means the vessel has corroded through, and replacement is the only option.
A qualified tradesperson will identify the source on site and explain what is required.
